FAMILY TREE MAKER 2014 TEUA TRIALThat’s reflected in the fact the various different editions of Family Tree Maker come with free trial subscriptions to various Ancestry packages. It features everything you’d expect to find in a genealogical program – the ability to records as much or as little detail about each individual in your tree, for example, plus the ability to import scanned images of old photos and documents for attaching to your ancestors’ records.įamily Tree Maker is also tied in very tightly with the Ancestry website, which betrays one of its principle aims, namely to get you to do the bulk of your research through Ancestry. Everything’s neatly organised into seven sections, and it won’t take you long to get up and running – with or without the included getting-started guide. The program blends a powerful feature set with user-friendly interface that won’t put off beginners. As a long-time user of Family Tree Maker since 2008, I took the latest version for a thorough test drive.įamily Tree Maker 2011 is designed to make the compilation, analysis and sharing of your family tree as painless as possible. Family Tree Maker has long led the rest of the industry, helped by its close links to the Ancestry website, and now a brand new version – 2011 – is upon us. The internet has changed all that – now millions of records are easily accessible online, but the problem of how you organise your discoveries remains, which is where dedicated family history programs come into their own. That alone would probably be enough to deter the average user.It wasn’t that long ago that genealogy was a niche pastime for those with enough time and money on their hands to tramp up and down the country looking for local record offices, draughty parish churches and anywhere else that might yield nuggets of information about long-forgotten ancestors. I eventually completed the download after using three different forms of technical support. FAMILY TREE MAKER 2014 TEUA SOFTWAREEven worse, that update, which was deemed mandatory, failed multiple times, and I couldn't run the software after several tries-even after restarting my computer. FAMILY TREE MAKER 2014 TEUA INSTALLThis is irritating I can understand needing to run an update for software I install using a CD I'm not so forgiving when it's a download. After a few steps, I was prompted to download an update. I opted for the download option, although installing it wasn't as simple as I expected. FAMILY TREE MAKER 2014 TEUA PCBoth PC and Mac versions are available if you opt for the CD version, you'll have to pay $9.95 for shipping and handling. The regular price for the download is $39.99, though it was on sale for $29.99 when I purchased it. Set-up and Interface You can download Family Tree Maker from the Web or order a CD there's no free trial. On its own, Family Tree Maker is very basic software, and doesn't offer the level of guidance that Ancestry possesses. Furthermore, the integration is clunky and confusing. If you want access to Ancestry's array of research resources, you'll have to create an account and link it to your Family Tree Maker account, however. It's owned by Ancestry, our Editors' Choice for genealogy software. Tracing your roots can be a fun activity and Family Tree Maker 2014 ($39.99 download) gives you a place to store your research results and print out basic charts of your family lineage.
